Moshannon Group Seeks new Outings Chair(s):

Moshannon Group outings for 2015 are now being organized, but we need your help.

We are looking for a new Outings Chair or co-Chairs to lead a trips in the upcoming year. The Club will provide training materials.

If you'd like to lead a Moshannon Group outing on your favorite trail or to your special area, please let us know so that we can put it on the Outings schedule.

Just send me the date of your hike, the time, the meeting place, and a 1 to 3 sentence description.

Moshannon Group Outings

All outings are open to the public as well as Moshannon Group members.

If you have ideas for places you would like visit with the Moshannon Group or if you want to lead a trip yourself, contact Group Chair Ernest Boyd at ernestcboyd@gmail.com or 814-861-2649.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. You may wish to read the Liability Waiver and/or the Sign-In Waiver before you choose to participate on an outing. For a printed version, contact the Sierra Club Outings Department at 415-977-5528.

Spring Creek Canyon Opens to the Public

The preservation of Spring Creek Canyon has been one of Moshannon Group’s principal conservation efforts as part of the Spring Creek Canyon Alliance. On September 30, 2011, this area opened to the public as State Game Lands 333.

Spring Creek Canyon Cooperative Management Area

The Spring Creek Canyon Cooperative Management Area is a land partnership among Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, The Pennsylvania State University, Benner Township, and Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. The main trail runs a total distance of 4.4 miles from the Benner Spring State Fish Hatchery (south) to the Bellefonte State Fish Hatchery (north) and borders historic Spring Creek.

In addition to hiking trails, this area also provides many recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting and biking. For more information, visit www.springcreekcanyon.com

A Guide to the Allegheny Front Trail

Ben Cramer, freelance writer and outdoor enthusiast, has released his new Guide to the Allegheny Front Trail online (1.7MB PDF). Cramer is the editor of Pennsylvania Hiking Trails, 13th ed. (Stackpole Books, 2008) and contributes to Moshannon Group’s On the Trail columns.

Outings News

Attention McKean and Elk Counties!

For all our friends in the Moshannon Group’s north country, more Sierra Club outings may be coming to your area.

The Lake Erie Group, which borders the Moshannon Group to the northwest, often holds outings and events in Allegheny National Forest. Members and Friends of Moshannon Group are welcome to participate.

Moshannon Group also hosts occasional outings in this area, with a focus on the issues faced by Allegheny National Forest. Watch this page for details.


Cross-Country Skiiers and Snowshoers

Moshannon Group Chair Gary Thornbloom maintains a contact list for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. When conditions are right, trips may be planned with only a few days notice.

About Service Outings

Service outings can range from trail maintenance with needs for chainsaws to remove downed limbs and paintbrushes to freshen trail blazes to creekside (and sometines in-creek) debris removal. A Spring Creek cleanup is usually run in conjuction with Earth Day.

We typically notate service outings on Home and Outings pages of this site.
